A Thin Yellow Line

Written by: Bernadette Langer

you haven’t known cowardice
until it races through you
like diarrhea.

the whites of your eyes
turning yellow with its taste
as you swallow hard
your own limitations.

with crap in your drawers
crawling across bodies
and severed limbs
searching for sanctuary
or salvation.

until it dawns on you
that cowardice is salvation
at the best of times

and fear is the sanctuary
in which it lives…
