when you do it

Written by: Blythe Journey

when you do it
make it count she said
then run fast home
i was eight years old
the bully was nine
everyday taking my bike
leaving me crying at the roadside
mom said never cry
you take a swing and aim well
when you do it
make it count she said
then run fast home
that boy's eye was black
for a good week

when you do it
make it count she said
then run fast home
i was 21 years old
as naive as nine
every year he took more of my pride
leaving me crying with a
handful of shame and bruises
the lesson forgotten until one day
the day i took a swing and aimed well
and when i did it
i made it count
and ran fast home
that boy's heart is still black
today
