Since You Asked...

With the tools of expectation,
you built your life in a box,
erecting walls within walls
of self-centered protection.
(knee-jerk reactions
to the gamesmanship
of adulthood).

You built a maze, and lived
with an angled sense of security,
a myriad of corners,
in which to hide from reason
and common sense;
you built from frustrations,
from the idiosyncrasies of personality
that expected too much from strangers,
and not enough from yourself and those you loved.

You left your happiness to others;
and yourself, no way out
but to look in another's eyes and be real.

I don't know where we go from here.
