The Spotted Owl

In the canopy the spotted owl waits
Uneasy, but not knowing just why
His life's habitat shrinking each day
Stating his worry with a hooting cry

Living his life in old growth forests
Knowing nothing of men and their ways
The North West his perfect environment
Deserving to live there the rest of his days

There are so many species lost to us now
Unable to exist with the advancement of man
The spotted owl may become next on the list
On old growth logging we must now put a ban…

NOTE….I was raised in a logging community.
Obviously there is heated debate between
environmentalists and the logging community.
Personally, I don’t believe we can afford to lose
even one more species if we can prevent it. The spotted
owl is listed as endangered or threatened already.

Dear LNC, According to the Huffington Post 200 species go extinct every day! I have read of similar numbers in other publications. Owls are special to me and I hope the logging industry can find some compassion and acknowledge the need to protect the Spotted Owl. What a brilliant poem. Well penned and very moving to animal lovers. Love, Carolyn PS - Zucchini will be welcome!
