Looking Inside

It wasn’t until
I first laid eyes
On the sullen faces
Lost on city streets
Children clothed
In filthy rags infested
Of hopelessness
I came to realize
I have never tasted
Forlorn angst
Or desperation
It was in that moment
I discovered
Deep within myself
Inside the pockets
Of my own humanity
That I always had
Coin to spare
