A Different Fear

Remembering fear
The sweat of retreat when one
can never seem to run far enough or fast enough.
Remembering the Christian children’s chants.
Devil worshiper, godless, the taunting hell
they saw for those not blessed to be themselves.

The jeer of the crowd for those not part.
The mob mentality of the Christian heart.
The damn you if your not me
to a girl of eight defies
any memory to obliterate.

Breathless behind a hollow core
door gasping with tears a heart pounding
with the hate thrown the Jew bated.
Was this even an inkling of what Tanta felt
as the German’s knocked down the door.
The marks on her skin brought memories
of trains and camps and more.

And, here in America land of the free
in a place which prides itself on Christianity
remembering the fear at eight, at twelve,
and at eighteen
and every Christmas in between.

Don’t tell, don’t speak, don’t let them know
your different from them ...
different hated, taunted, chased
and if possible erased.

Remember the fear the mob,
the gang, the chanting group,
when you stand, and pray,
when you say Amen.

Remember Christ was a Jew
and what was done to him.
Pray that this is never done
to another child again.

I don't think so, it's familial hate - they are all from the same root and all fighting to be Father's favorite child - immature unevolved human children - siblings fighting constantly

It is so sad, Debbie, that many religious people, those who call themselves Christians included, have done horrible, godless things in the name of God. I fear that they have made their religious rules their god, rather than God. My heart is broken for what is happening in Iraq right now...what is happening in the Sudan and Lybia. True Christians need to live what they say they believe and never persecute others for their beliefs. I am sorry this has not always been the case.

They were taught this by listening to their parents, they were only children too.

Brave girl you, for sharing this, telling it all and spilling it out. Truth must be revealed in order for change to occur. Such a beauty of a poem, despite its pain. This is one of those that I didn't want to chop up with "favourite lines" or "oh, I see right there, RIGHT THERE, what you did, sooo good" I think I'll just let it be, without opening its veins. It has poignancy and I know should be in print. Honey, I have an idea.. just now.... I know the United Church of Canada would love this.

Okay, you're going to think I'm really off the deep end (lol. more than usual) but here. http://www.ucobserver.org/2011/11/submission%20guidelines.pdf They usually don't do poetry. But somehow I feel this would move them and you might be that 1 in a million. http://www.ucobserver.org/ Believe it or not, a Christian magazine would publish this. No follower of Christ would do this. xoxox Your Dee

This is done to millions of children each day- today they would mostly be Muslim or Sihk. Prayer is not enough. It is up to the parents of this generation to LIVE what they preach. I am exposing Verity to world religions and the beautiful shades of peoples around the globe (only through books now... it is so vanilla, now, where we live) ... Verity just learned about Moses, what a slave is... so HARD... H.A.R.D... to explain!!! And what of the Kurdish now in Iraq? Babies starving on a mountain.

'these are not "real" Christians who do these things, Deb. The words that define people are often incorrectly given to people who do not deserve them. It's a shame what is done in the name of religion every day across the world, but i have much admiration for those with the love of the creator in their hearts.

Debbie I fully understand what you are saying, I have looked at the hypocrisy in many religious people forever, and I can never understand it. They have taken the beautiful words of Jesus and made a mockery of them. I have my own views on God, but organized religion leaves me cold. This is a really great poem, in fact one of the best I have seen, my friend....Peter
