Consumed

Venom drips from his tongue in honeyed splendor
He mesmerizes his audience with a Cobratic symphony
Slithering under their high expectations
He possesses a patient elegance
Skills learned in an ancient garden

His invitation so enticing
They are the unsuspecting mice
Gobbling up snow colored treats
Imbedded in healthy labels

Glazed diabetic eyes
Look on in confusion
Lost in pretty mazes
Addicted to "bliss points"

Sugar
Sweet sugar
Tobacco's evil sister
The expansion of a nation
Spilling over belted borders

He starts them young
Keeps them within his pythoned grip
Twenty five teaspoons a day
Drains away their resistance

Supersize
Dietize
Energize
Let them have their cake and eat it too
The many will become the few
Before they know it, they'll be eaten by you

A once great nation
Consumed

Thanks Debbie, I am happy with this one myself. I wrote it after watching an episode of fifth estate on sugar and what it is doing to our population.

Brilliant write...the first stanza had me rapt and wow, and then the unexpected turn to a smart focus on something that's damaging real big. Sugar does have most in a pythoned grip.. I must read this out to my mum, she is THE sugar addict!!

Oh dear Rick, I'm a sugar addict, you've made me feel quite ill lol. Fortuneately I have one of those metabolisms and work routine that keeps the weight off, but I guess you can't tell what damage is being done inside. Problem is the manufacturers know sugar makes things taste good and we will buy things that taste good. Excellent write with subtle dual meaning mixed in. Take care, Richard

Oh Richard.....This is fantastic! WOW! Different than what I expected from you, but.......so timely....so needed......so....vital. I thought at first this was about the original sin and all that, but I started to wonder about the snow colored treats. Yes...all true....Sugar does feed cancer cells! :( We need to cut back. Thanks for bringing this to light. You continue to amaze me. Hugs

It was about both, original sin has led to all other forms. I have written another poem utilizing your new form. It was fun to write. I hope I got the order right.

This is indeed so expressive and yeah... Sugar and tobacco are some very deadly siblings sweeping through nations, not just your land. This is an excellent write up Richard. Thanks for the share

Thanks Funom, big business has is impacting our health and now scientists are looking at links between Alzheimer's and sugar they say that it is Diabetes of the brain. Also they say that sugar feeds cancer cells and cause them to draw faster.

Will we as a nation become all consumed in sugar, and get sugar (diabetes) for a disease? Hey Richard, I am sorry that I have been missing your poetry, I am so sorry that I haven't been around to read your poems to the point where you notice it! I hope not Russell, yet we have epidemic levels of obesity, heart disease , cancer and Alzeimers and these seem to correlate with our consumption of sugar and artificial sweeteners. The average north American consumes 25 teaspoons a day. Thanks for your kind response, I am glad we are okay.

Obesity is such a huge problem around the world now. There's a "serpent" everywhere you look. Nice write Ron

Thanks Ron, they are now discovering things called obesidens in our food chain which are leading to our obesity as a nation. If we follow the money iwe will see who is benefiting from this epidemic. Eventually our health care systems will be bankrupted.

Right on, Richard! You did a super job with this topic. Sugar, one of the true gateway drugs. I enjoy how your lines move along to very word that is your title, so everything comes around full circle.
