Yesterday

Yesterday, as dawn rose over Diamond Head
All the trees remained in silk screen silhouette as
My furrowed brow expressed in my features
Troubles that had yet to materialize, yet how real they
Seemed, how surreal my vision of the loss.
So I cast my net to keep from entering too deep,
Far enough to keep the fears at bay, far
Away from the harsh hemp at noon day.

Now, as sunlight seeps through misty clouds
It feels surreptitiously suspicious as in nature;
Looks as if the clouds are gathering gloom,
As if they are purposely trying to conceal,
Though in their dark grey, a rainbow.
They're moving fast upon the current.
Here below as in the sky, they cry
To release in their wet, a catharsis which helps me
Stay centered on a path leading toward the light.

Oh how I love the freedom the rain expresses.
I love the musical sound, the serene scent.
Believe you have the courage to overcome and
In doing so, the power of the heavens will erase
Yesterday, and flood today with sublime sunshine.

Great job, Connie. I really liked how you used the nature metaphor for troubles and hope. I was looking for poems that followed the theme expressed in the song, hence nostalgia, and regret. Yours has a more positive message. Congratulations!

Gosh Roy, the nostalgia/regret theme sailed right over my head. I should have read your instructions better. At any rate I am thrilled and honored with 3rd. place . Thank you so much!

Mahalo, Connie! I love the way the last stanza balances out the first. Great writing. By the way , Richard Lamoureux wrote a poem called Yesterday. You might want to share yours with him

I am pretty sure his is for the contest as mine is, so I will wait on that. It was fun to write this poem as I am a Beatle fan. Mahalo for your nice remarks.

Hi, Connie! How are you? This acrostic will be in the winners list! I love how you use each first word keeping the flow and conveying coherent thoughts through every line. Nice use of enjambment and "Surreptitiously suspicious" ... indeed, an alliteration! : D Best of luck in the contest, Connie!!

"Now there's a shadow hanging over me" - had to go make sure of the words - V2. Magical descriptions, nope, wrong word. Lovely? Yep. Others too. But, yesterday - the poem makes yesterday inviting - not a "shadow hanging over" in a heavy sense, but "flooding today with sublime sunshine." Erased, perhaps, but leaving a "serene scent." Wonderful read, enjoyed. Diamond head? Hawaii???
