WOMAN, I BE

I am woman
when I reel in a three pound trout
on a lazy July afternoon,
North lake waters ablaze,
skin freckling as dragonflies
hover and heckle

I am woman
When I dance to a reel
at a Caleigh in Cape Breton,
six, red bangles on my wrists,
wild tunes enticing me towards
strong arms

My hands stroke the cheek
of my sick daughter,
my touch almost, but not quite,
softer than her breath
or these hands can wield a hammer,
as they did when I rebuilt
our old, back deck,
lifting lumber and laying planks
with aptitude and confidence

My femininity sweats
Regularly at the gym
As I pump iron
or chase new goals

Today I may bake bread

but not so long ago I made my bread
by helping to run a small office,
organizing and managing,
coddling customers
who understood my worth

If I never bore a child,
chose a different path,
woman, I would still be
nurturing other dreams

Preteen, I'd dreamed
of being a nun,
serving the Highest
with prayer and service

Instead, I wed
letting hips unman my man,
his lips laying new roads
while calling my name

Within my wardrobe
silk and satin hang, ever ready,
and my dresser houses
tees, hockey shirts, jeans...
somehow they all get along just fine

Fondly, I recall
watching football with my father
our winter days skiing,
arguments about Trudeau,
those Liberal days

Should I end up bald from chemo
like so many Amazons
before me,
long scars replacing breasts
or dark sutures stealing
ovaries
I will continue to be
woman,
eternal yet inconsistent,
loving persistently,
at one with all man-kind
surprising even myself
questing for life's true meaning
but always refusing
             to be fully defined
