Before the Party

Friday night
and here I am

caught

I fought yes I did
cried till my eyeballs hurt
Dad said NO he tossed me down
to the cellar with the rest of the trash

he said

oh what he said
“How would he know?
Did it show?”

I fell I climbed
damn the grime he took my shoes
so I’d not run

No coat, no shoes, where could I go
the snow was falling outside

I could hear the dance music
from the window high and small
I sat and I listened from there
mice skittered at the edge of the floor
one light sickly yellow
the door locked

I’m scared.

You describe a rather frightening scenario quite well with your words.

Thoughts that are so filled with emotion Debbie. You do these so well that I feel the pain is real and wish you tight hugs for the talent of the poem and however it connects to reality!

I spent too much of my life locked inside, first my parents, then by the mate I chose [better the devil that you know?] and in no small part do to my own insecurities, though I was never locked in a cellar, I'm sure you know your own mind can feel very much like a dark scary place!

This is a powerful piece, in fact so powerful that the picture is not even required.

I have been like this kid locked behind doors as my friends or at least the ones I wished were friends enjoyed their young lives. I think that now I am like a big kid because I'm making up for the time I missed in childhood.

That young girl inside the grown woman, could and would never be able to forget a night such as this, or a degrading feel of despair. As children we are expected to respect our parents, as a parent.....it is our job to respect our children. Too often, and sad to say, many parents forget that part of the arrangement. My heart again breaks for that girl, and hope someone will restore her faith in unconditional love. :) Hugs, and Many Happy New Years ahead, Debbie!

I love the image you carved here, and the photo you chose to go along with it, mesmerizes the reader, for a minute I thought it was part of your life story, glad it wasn't, basements are eerie places as children, many things took place in basements thanks for the interesting read xxx
