Southern Tradition

Daddy didn't look at them as they
passed by
August illuminating unkempt hair
and
worn-out hand-me-downs
a woman and her four children
walking in the road
to avoid the sidewalk on our side.

I see her every day
but she doesn't have time
to see me, ebony eyes
too busy watching babies
crying over the hot asphalt

Daddy spits and shakes his head.
' Too sorry to buy a car!'

Years later a muddy red boot print
graces our front door
A gift from a long grown child
(confident as a ghost who's never
been seen)
in exchange for the tv in the trunk
of a car his Mama never had

Daddy spits and shakes his head.
' Well look at where they come from!'

You did very well expressing this unfortunate theme in your own, distinct manner and voice. The way this poem ends has a strong effect, because it sort of loops everything back to the beginning with the Father's ingrained attitude which is one of the very things which keeps this cycle going.

Thanks. I'm never quite certain whether what makes sense in my brain will actually translate in the minds of others. This kind of feedback is the main reason I started posting here. Thanks for reading. :)

Ahhh thank you so much; I lost my understanding at the part about the son...amazing how it's so obvious now :) Thank goodness for the poor mothers who did instill the need of good grades in school and the pride of being able to hold a job. It has always been rougher here in the south...unfortunately the bad stand out more than the good.

It's basically about how racism and discrimination affects society as a whole. "Daddy" sees the woman as beneath him, and chooses to ignore her, which only serves to propel the cycle of violence and poverty as one of her children grows up and robs his house. Thanks for reading. :)
