OPENING A POET'S VEIN, WORDS,

Gnawing at the axis, words,
lengthening a late lover's stride, words,
reddening stinging-eyes, words,
slamming a thousand doors, words.

Whore words and virgin words and
words that materialize in sultry alchemy,
words newborn or antediluvian,
simple, complex, tempting, vexing,
over-used and outdated,
misused, too many hyphenated,
usual, predictable, kind, rude,
lip-curled words with a back-alley attitude,
melancholy words meant to blur fact,
words for it, for this, for that.

Words that reveal more than they should
and words that hide too much,
words that steal, words that double deal,
words that disembowel,
words that cheaply cop a feel,
words that echo for generations,
words that howl, whimper, rush, pontificate,
words that heal, words that rape,
words that dole out tiny rations.

Words that flaunt and words that haunt
and words between an endless string of ands,
words that corrupt and words that paint
and words that stir up mass graves.

Words I love, words I hate,
words are freedom, words hold us fast,
words just refuse to wait, melt in an hour,
And yet, friend, how a word can last.

Dear Cyndi - 'back-alley attitude' resounds in my head. You are back full force sweet poet. Sticks and stones never rang more false. xxx's ooo's, Kathy

This one is super-fresh, Cyndi(super-fresh -- wot does that actually mean?). You even used "pontificate" ..... like how it sounds at the end of that line. Big props on the 4th stanza. I really enjoy that particular stanza; it reads extra well for me.
