Generations

Denial is a can of peas
whose contents
should never be indulged
beyond the expiration date.
Yet there I stood,
evidence screaming reality
at my eyes, their gaze steadfast
upon the wailing baby girl
before me in her bassinet.
My mind then confidently knew
that what lay there
could have never come
from briefest self-indulgence.
Still, my heart wouldn't listen—
And rightly so.

I turned and faced
a solitary window,
which framed a cold and gray
November day
that froze as well
the unrecorded moment.
Though soft upon my parted lips
came unbidden words:
“I love you, dearest child”—
knowing all that was yet to be,
for here lay an open book
in which life would write
a young girl’s timeless, playful mirth,
but also test her brazen dreams
and tireless hopes alike.

On life’s other end,
my mother wearies
of her endless days
and puzzles
over life prolonged well past
these ninety-seven years—
asking with familiar eyes,
undimmed by age,
the reason why,
which none can answer,
and which none tries.
Then, soon enough
both memories and questions fade,
their cycles now complete—
and new ones to begin.

Ah, the meaning of life, the universe, and everything... Douglas Adams knew the answer - 42 - and that seems about as real to me as any of the others, in the end. What is real is how well you expressed humanity's dilemma in our journey. Going in my faves.

Yes, 42, but we never asked the right question. The answer is never satisfying until it meets the demands of truth. People often rely on notions and ill-formed opinions when making fundamental choices--as if believing something makes it true. You honor me with your comments.

Very good work Mark. The thoughts are well placed and portrayed, resembling the lyrics of a song; and they lasted exactly like a song. A word came to my mind when I re\d the 2nd stanza: "It is Epic". I think it is. 7 G.

Georgio, thanks for these wonderful comments, high praise from one whom I consider among the best of all poets here. I read a couple of other epic poems, and, reflecting on your observation, reclassified this one to Epic. Never thought of my self writing one.

The cyclical nature of things lends harmony to all existence. But a little random adventure adds spice. Thanks for stopping by, Brian. See you soon.

Mark, this is an exceptional poem, I love how you expressed the pondering of conception and life.. the mysteries which surround that... the passing of time... and approaching end of life.. all mysteries flowing together into this very rich piece.

Becca, I treasure this comment. You have responded pretty much in lock step with what I hoped to convey in each of the three stanzas. What a treat to read something that is as poetic as anything I write.

Our minds return again and again to the big, unanswered questions, hoping that the passage of time will allow to solve the riddles, and occasionally we do gain insight, deeply personal and impossible or unwise to share with others, but rather to savor in age. Joseph, thanks very much for your kind word and visit that always lends dignity to my page.

Dear S.z, thank you very much for visiting my page and for your wonderful comments--deeply appreciated. Now consider the duration of male involvement when creating a child vs. the astonishment and remarkable complexity of the end result. I was in denial of this--still a marvel to me. Thanks for asking.
