A Winter Night

The keenest winter wind so shrilly whistled
In the night;
The fire in the fireplace flared and fizzled,
Giving light
Through the wailing winter night.

Within the cabin all was warm and cozy
In the night;
The children's cheeks were glowing red and rosy
From the fight
In the snowy winter night.

The cabin shook and shuddered, softly creaking
In the night;
The west wind wildly stuttered, as if speaking
Through its might,
In the windy winter night.

The chestnuts loudly crunched as they were cracking
In the night;
The popcorn proudly popped, and lips were smacking
At the sight,
By the fire in the night.

The children in the house are sweetly sleeping
Through the night;
The wind, kept out, is wildly wailing, weeping
At the slight,
While it wanders through the night.
