Death of a Kangaroo

Cobwebs sag, gloomy clouds
like a furrowed brow
loom over the house-
 a kangaroo lies dying on
our country road .
A car's apologeticscreech-
 a deathly thud-
 the twisted scrambling
of a broken creature
And I, watching dumbstuck,
as it sprawls, drawing at
underbrush with frantic forepaws -
reluctant to let go of life
and earth

When others of its kind
came back to find its
carcass, devoid of warmth,
they shed opalescent tears of grief

Tears with the scent of eucalypts
and raindrops

A mute devotion
 reflecting
aspects of me

a touching story of a very sad reality. Where I live there are mobs of kangaroos around the fields at dusk. Sadly I see them dead as well along the freeways out of town.

I love this sad poem SuZ. I am appalled at the amount of Dead Kangaroos on the western Australian roads, It leaves me sick to the stomach. Thank for bringing this subject up. Might touch a few hearts. The Australian attitude towards the Kangaroo stinks....peter

You write with a pen of sadness and make the bleak images shimmer with a stark beauty.

Beautifully written, SuZ. How well I remember coming across the kangaroos on the country roads when I lived in OZ. Many thanks for your recent visit to my poem :)

Suz - Boy those last two lines sums the demise of the kangaroo perfectly and how affected we are at the sadness of the death of beauty. Although we have no kangaroos in Connecticut, the deer are analogous in car collisions. Sad sights. When I see one of these beauties (some call them rodents on stilts) I always think of the death of my daughter. So innocent, so sudden. love, Kathy

I know that some animals have the emotional wherewithal to grief over one of theirs who dies. It is a sad fate for so many animals who've boundaries we encroach.
