The Alcohol Train

I lost another friend
who was riding the alcohol train.
Little did I know
he was in so much pain.
He kept it hidden well,
 didn't notice it at all.
His family kept him close,
as they began to see him fall.

He was always sneaking a drink
 wasting away all his time.
As long as he had some alcohol,
 everything would seem just fine.
Until he'd get to drunk
then his temper would begin to rage.
He was like a crazy animal
 released from his cage.

He spent a couple years,
 of his life behind bars.
From doing stupid things,
in a drunken haze he stole a car.
 Maybe you would think,
that might have sobered him up.
But once you ride that train,
it's really hard to get enough.

It can make you kind of sad
even bring tears to your eyes.
When a friend you thought you knew,
drinks himself to death, and slowly dies.
When you think life is peachy,
and everything is going as planned.
That alcohol train comes calling,
and everything gets out of hand.

Tjhis is a great poem, it is so sad that people don't relize the harm that they do to themselves. My next door neighbor in Chicago had diabetis, but he never stop drinking and died at the age of 44. i used to drink, but never had a habit. I quit 30 years ago. Thanks for his wonderful poem..... I guess some people constitution is such that they crave alcohol to the point where nothing else matter, we call them alcoholics. I drank hard for many decades, smoking one cigarette after another until one day I stopped drinking and smoking on the same day. Saved my life, and it wasn't hard to do, either the alcohol or the cigarettes. It is all a matter of what your priorities are.

Such a sad story that happens way too often in this world, but you did a wonderful job of writing about it, Dan. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. Keep on writing! Love, Kim

Alcohol train, very good metaphor for the ride it takes some people on. A never ending battle to death. I've seen some who have ended this way. Very sad

Such poignant expressions. This is beautiful, Dan. I fear for someone with this very problem. It's not fun to see them suffer. You have a beautiful way with words that is certainly very special. It's nice to visit your page again. :) I hope all is well with you friend. Always, Laura

Funny and ironic how you and I both just posted poems with an alcohol theme unbeknownst to one another. As an alcoholic myself, I completely identified with this piece. Good job and kudos! :)
