Truly Thankful

Thankful
Yet unappreciative
Perhaps I have been given too much
My mind encased
Out of touch
Expecting more
I need one but grab all four
Exceptional has become ho hum
I'm marching to a muted drum
Forgetting who I am and where I'm from
My bloated ego
Continues to grow
I see less and do not know
Self importance mixed with vanity
Obsures my humanity

I live within the walls of my entitlement
Selfishness permeates my days
One day I'll realize that nothing stays
Will I cry out to heaven why me
Will what I lose set me free

Once again
Thankful
For the here and now
A life of color with some pow
Looking at others
Feeling wow

Others who seem thankful
With so much less
Little things make them feel blessed
With open hearts gratitude expressed
They live life in different ways
Simple pleasures result in praise

So I say thanks
I sing out my praise
I'm learning to think in different ways
No more wasted days
I recognize
Finally realize
Having less can lead to wise
I'll live prayerfully with upturned eyes
My ego diminished down to size

People not things
Relationships grow
A heart changed will always show
In the end not about me
Being other focused helps me see
Causes me to be........Truly Thankful!

It can be so easy to forget how blessed we are and believe we are somehow deserving of what we have instead off appreciating that our very breath is a gift bestowed upon us. Thanks for commenting.

Ow I needed this poem..Its wise..truthful and profound.Sometimes its so easy in life to forget how thankful i should be for anything happening in my life.To have less or to share from what i have is the most fulfilling feeling in life..and to realize how good God is with his daily miracles..Tnks for visiting and for being kind..An excellent poem here.

I really responded and identified with this piece, Richard. Only thing, in line 3, should read "too". Totally enjoyed this piece; I related to just about every single line, thought, idea and emotion. Good job, my friend :)
