The Poets I Hope to Meet in Heaven

I pray that in my Eternity,
I'll meet Shelley, Poe and Emily
That we'll all sit down at a table round,
And at length discuss our Poetry!

And Longfellow, lest we forget
Lord Byron, Shakespeare, and beloved Keats!
If I prove their favorite Poet,
I could accomplish no greater feat!

For all my many silly musings,
This one I covet above the rest
For my Soul's toil- finally proving
That the Masters love me best!

*My rhymes are rather choppy and will need revising a some point, but I wrote It just now on a whim ;) Also, I am open to new title suggestions; I struggled to conjure a fitting one

*** Here is an alternate version suggested to me by Delysia Hendricks. This sweet soul reworked my poem and I am posting it so the two can be juxtaposed. Please feel free to comment and say which one you prefer and why. Be as candid as you want; constructive criticism is ALWAYS welcomed and appreciated. Thanks, and a BIG thank you to Delysia for her revision! Here is her rendition:

I pray in all Eternity
masters Poe and Emily
Longfellow, Shakespeare and Shelley
would seek me out
to hear me spout
not theirs but my own poetry

The humble Keats
would kiss my feet
his favorite poet of them all
they'd all but swoon
and bow and croon
midst the mightiest I'll stand tall

*Let us know what you think, PLEASE! Pretty, pretty please with sugar on top? lol ;)

I liked the first version. It seemed to work better for me...

I actually prefer the first, I think it flows better with the slightly longer lines. The second however has that 'naughty' school boy feel about it. I am a huge fan of each of these poets with their books lining my shelf amongst many others. (except Emily) =(

Thanks again, Tom. Now, I must know: why aren't you a fan of Emily? (You can tell me privately, of course) ;)

I accept the challenge. I think Delysia's revision is very good. I see some bumps but overall both versions have good qualities. This one may take some time to get the flow a little more precise without taking out some of the names. Great content !

This is one of those pieces that's going to take me a while to iron out. I'm going to come back to it when I have fresher eyes and have had time to ruminate over it. Thanks for your feedback, Karen; you know it's always appreciated! <3

The rhyme scheme is not choppy at all my beloved poet. But if you feel the need to change some wordings go right ahead but I thought it was well conceived and left as is.

Thanks, Mustapha. It just doesn't flow as effortlessly as I would like; it needs some ironing, though I haven't the faintest idea right now of how to achieve it. I welcome any suggestions :)

Thanks for taking time for reviewing. Sorry for being cross last night; I was feeling a bit ill-tempered. Your vernacular is your own, so who am I to question it? Anyway, thank you for your feedback! :)

I would love to sit around that table!...I liked the rhyme scheme in this poem, and the flow of the words. Nicely done! As far as a title, I was going to say "Heaven For A Poet", but that is one of mine! I wouldn't mind if you borrowed it though! Great work!...Thank you so much for the encouraging comments!

I would personally invite you to that little gathering, Kelly :) I'm still struggling for a better title, though. Usually titles come to me fairly easily, but not this time. Glad you liked the rhyming, but I think it's much too choppy, irregular and jarring; it needs some doctoring for sure lol. Thanks for reading and replying, sister! :)

May a suggest a title to you? How about, "Poetic Hearts" Lovely, this is a great tribute to some of our greatest poets, thanks for sharing xxx

I very much appreciate the suggestion and will definitely take it into consideration. It is a tribute to some of my favorite poets, but it is also quite ego-centric, I must admit. It was just a random thought I had and decided to try and capture it in a poem. Self-serving as it is, it is an honest piece. Thanks for the read, review and suggestion, Rose! :)
