Spare That Cricket

Spare That Cricket

By Elton Camp

So it was a cricket you heard last night
And in its song you took no delight

But found it to be extremely disturbing
Your sleep the critter to be curbing

But he meant you not the least ill-will
He hoped his song a girl would thrill

Rubbing his forewings the sound does create
The one you call noise and so intensely hate

On the female’s front legs her ears are found
So she can invite the boy cricket to come around

The chirps are different for each species
Thus, only their own type it will please

“It seems there must be something wrong
In wanting to silence any song.”

With Robert Frost I just have to agree
So why not just let the little cricket be?

Really, I don't like to hear them either. The background of this is that last night my daughter had her sleep interrupted by a cricket on the back porch. This morning she released a poem about tthe experience. I immediately tossed out this one as a counterpoint to what she had written. We both like Robert Frost's poems, so I just had to insert his comment from "A Minor Bird." All that having been said, I'll probably get the Raid and see if I can eliminate the cricket before tonight. It's simply in the wrong place. Elton
