Broken Wings

A newborn butterfly just broke out of her cocoon shell.
She spread her orange and black wings
and attempted her first flight.
She not only flew, she soared through the heavens.
The sunlight gave her warmth that she had never known before.

Little did she know, that this feeling would not last.
This monarch would cross paths with an uncaring, ravenous bird.
It grasped the butterfly in it's claws,
and with the bird's hungry beak, it tore the precious wings from the monarch.
A bird doesn't care who it hurts,
as long as it satisfies them.

The butterfly was delirious, from the pain and the shock.
Her beautiful wings were taken away.
She could no longer fly amongst the warm sunlight.
She now only knows the despair and the darkness that she used to be.
Now that monarch has become a caterpillar.
And, death has become her cocoon.

Hi Kelly, this Is an excellent write. Now, we can take It as It stands or If It Is Metaphor, we can take It differently, as more human. As It stands It Is a sad piece on the life of a butterfly, very well written I might add. But then you wrote It Kelly so I would expect nothing more. It can be taken as a child being born Into life, knowing the joy of early childhood, then going through abuse and Its life changes for the worse. Aman or woman being destroyed by love. An excellent write....MIKE.

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments, as always. I do appreciate it, my friend.... This can be interpreted in many ways, and I like that kind of mystery when I read a poem. I am never sure if I've gotten it right!... To be honest, I did write this as a metaphor for a child who has been abused. I grew up with a stepfather who bullied me, and liked to bully those who were smaller than him. And it really brought a shyness and a darkness into my life that I've had trouble escaping from, ever since.

The reality of nature is a wild flavour that our domestic palate does not always appreciate.

This kind of thing is a harsh reality of nature that needs to be understood and excepted, instead of just ignored. Thank you for stopping by, Michael. I appreciate it very much! :)

Congrats on your win. An entomological note, Monarchs are generally avoided by birds as they taste terrible because of the Milkweed plant the larvae feed upon exclusively. There is a mimic species (Viceroy) which does not taste so bad but birds avoid because they imitate Monarchs. There are mathematical models of the relative % of each species maximizes survival of both. this Monarchs passing may benefit the species as the bird may well avoid them in the future. May be a poem here.
