Absent Father

Who is my father?
That's one question I will never have the answer to.
My father abandoned me before I was even born.
Thankfully, my mother kept me,
when she easily could have given me up for abortion or adoption.
My mother is one half of me, but I was always curious
about the man who made up my other half.

I don't know where he lives, I don't know if he is alive or dead.
I don't have a picture of him, I don't even know his name.
I know nothing about my father.

Is he a doctor, is he a teacher, is he the mailman, is he my neighbor?
I often wondered, if I could have walked passed him on the street one day,
and never even known it.
We could have been standing next to each other, in line at the grocery store.
And, he wouldn't even know that I was his daughter.

I could have brothers and sisters out there somewhere.
Maybe I am not an only child.
I would like to see this man's face just once.

But, if he didn't love me enough, to abandon me,
maybe I should do the same thing to him.

Hi Kelly, on this one I can't honestly say I know what your feeling. I always had both my parents and I can't even think of what It might be like never having one. You will always have the questions and even If you ever did find out who he was and see him, you may still have the same questions. This one really touches the heart Kelly for it rings true, not just for you Kelly, but for many others also. Walk In the light my dear Friend. Have a good day. Catch you later. Your Friend always...MIKE.

Hi Mike, Thank you once again for your kind words, my friend...This poem was not an easy one to write. But, these feelings have been with me since I was a kid, and they needed to be expressed. I don't think that I will ever meet my Dad. Even if I do, those answers that I am looking for will probably always remain hidden. And, I understand that and have accepted that in my heart.

Someone should be able to help trace him down. If this is true it is very sad. Congratulations on your win. Love, Joyce

Some of my poetry is fictional, but every word of this one is the truth. And, it is very sad not knowing who my father is. Thank you for the kind words, Joyce! I appreciate it very much. :)

gosh, it's so sad you can't know. Some people, it is very important to them to know this. Your mother won't tell you even after all this time? My hubbie was in a similar situation. He became a bounty hunter one year and tracked his father down. But never saw him in person. He found out he has at least three half brother/sisters out there. But never met them and probably never will. I find it so sad but he does not even seem to care!!! sure enjoyed your poem.

Not having a Dad around was tough when I was a kid, especially around Father's Day. I always wondered about him, and I would still like to know who he was. Yet, every time I ask my Mom about it, she sort of ignores the question. I will probably never know who he is, yet he is a part of me, no matter what. Thank you for stopping by, Andrea, I'm glad that you enjoyed this poem. :)
