an old Photograph

I found a school picture of
a little boy the other day.
He was wearing a little red polo.
His little hands sat folded in front of him.
His nose almost to small for his face
which was dotted with freckles that
I was willing to bet
time had long since taken away.
His lips etched in a thin smile
more of a smirk really.
Hiding behind long bangs
I couldn't help
but notice his eyes
big, brown
and full of wonder.

And so I couldn’t help but to ponder
what sort of hopes
rested behind those brown eyes
so big and so
full of wonder.

Did those hopes
become dreams dreamed
and did he call up all the
courage he could muster
to pursue the ideals
that surely rested in the wonder
did he make it
or were those dreams
torn asunder

Then I turned the picture over
to find scrawled on the back in
in fading ink a date
and name
what a shame
this boy was me
and somewhere along the line
the hopes
that rested in the
bright eyed wonder
settled on the dreams
being torn
asunder

I like your writing style, I picture you at the beach building a sand castle, except in my dream, the water never reaches far enough to tear down the castle, Like a twelve year old who returns to the peer year after year still smelling the sea like sifted poetry, love your poems the are making me want to respond, hugs xxx

about your poem: amazing how you got lost, when looking over that one picture in which brought thoughts and more wonder to the mind. it was also interesting to read the part when you turned the picture over and realized the faded name was your own.... enjoyed the heart felt moment.... :-( (-: xox~ Linda
