SELF PORTRAIT DEDICATED TO LEON TROTSKY contest

SELF PORTRAIT DEDICATED TO LEON TROTSKY (by Frida Kahlo)

                                                         Lover,
                                                 If you dare the Truth

 find the Heart of
          Frida
Whip the whiteness
from the curtain on the left

                                            Out spill my genteel manners
                                                              Generations bred--
                                                        My true self,
                                                       Tears through the
                                                Silky Latin-shaded skin--

                                                I, the restless lioness

                                                            Mauling
                                                      Devouring you
                                                     With undiluted joy

                                              you, my unsuspecting lover
                                                 bold power makes you
                                                            savory
I save your genitals 'til last—
which your frantic friends will find
                                                                 gently hanging
                                                              in a fragrant flowering tree--
Piquant dessert to be relished ere
                                                           I sink into
                                                                     a gentle
                                                                  velvet sleep.

If your courage rages
     seek my Soul
Loosen the line
     of artistic perfection
        on the right
                                                           Like a Hydra
                                                              Blazing
                                             my Soul will come a-screaming
with a shriek to free generations of
                                              long dead and servile sisters
                                                     from their graves
                                                       Together, we will
                                                      Lick the poisons
                                                        from your soul
                                                    Force rancid politics
                                                       to fly like bees
into the eyes of your enemies

                                                           Allowing you
                                                 My Darling of Magnificence
                                                                 a
                                                         single night
                                                        of peaceful rest.

Thanks Sheri--I enjoyed writing this one, too! The fun of the contests is writing about subjects never imagined.....

Oh I do like the "rancid politics...", nicely done. But how exactly does all that passion and fire lead to a peaceful rest?

re: peaceful rest....that is the beauty of her art--it is full of contrast. If his political enemies vaporized, he would have a peaceful rest....and if her enemies would leave her alone, she too would have a peaceful rest.....

I try not use "Wow!" too often in comments .... but, Wow! Victoria, this poem is fantastic. You highlighted/reflected the visceral nature of Frida Kahlo's paintings(and the "Bitch" part of herself that she so famously mentioned)in your lines, but also move from the fight, from the struggle, into moments of grace. Well done! I realize how subjective taste can be, but I'll be a bit surprised if you don't place 1st in the contest.

Your appreciation means a lot to me, Chris...and your words are eloquent. I would never have thought to write about her, but for the contest--no matter what the outcome, I am pleased to write this one....V
