A Choice

Jesus was not a choice
He was thrust upon me
From my youth
He gave his life
So I could live
And find salvation
And give and give
But take I must
For I’m a fool
Certain to die
And live like a tool

But the Buddha
He lived in between
Denial and joy
Siddhartha Gautama
Lived the middle way
Devadatta tried
To kill his soul
A Judas at best
They both it seems
Had the same goal.

The Euphrates
And the Ganges
Both still flow
And people
Have loved upon
Both banks
So I ask you this question
“How do I save my soul”?
With Jesus or Buddha
Whom do I pay the toll?

To live in heaven
Or back on the earth
As I try to become
An angel of mercy
A Bodhisattva I’m not
Though I’d like to
Get it right,
The first time I try
Hear me dear Lord
And tell me why?

It's amazing this world and its diversity of religion and views of life. This is a beautiful poem, exploring different paths from different perspective. . Always, Laura

I Like the content of this poem,, its such a logical, way of thinking. I believe religion has done much good , in searching for truth & enlightened, faith to the creator, but so much bloodshed, torturing, social problems.,, continue to present, in the name of religion! Its a harsh reality to comprehend, the complexity of it all. Its a struggle, that so many including myself, continue to question. I Try to stay spiritually aware. I ask for stregnth & guidance. Peace always :) cherie

I wrote it hoping it would make people think about just what you said. Two words: Middle East. I think we can see what one religion interpreted three ways brings to the table. Peace, hope, and understanding. Kilmer :)

A very philosophical view of the forces behind religion that present many choices, indeed. I choose to believe that Religion is created as an effort to make people believe in too many rules and rituals conjured up by imperfect men. Spirituality is the abidance of compassion and love taught by the ancient teachers you mention in your poem. I choose to follow the less confusing spiritual path to redemption. Yes, I thought about this poem that long ... have a beautiful day :)

Well said. Religion was conceived to tame the masses. I believe on must look inward and also study the master philosophers. I am just confused and amused by religious right. thanks for the comments. I have something more to think about today. You have a great day as well.
