Never Too Late

~though we become tattered and torn,
we must keep making our way
through the brambles and thorns,
to emerge on the others side
completely whole, and justified~

As we come nearer to the end of our lives,
and we ponder what this time here was all about,
we think about the legacy we’ll leave behind.

In days to come, people will remember who we were ...
Will we be remembered as someone dark,
someone bitter and angry and full of hate?
Or would we rather be remembered as someone
who was forgiving and loving …
It’s never too late
to choose to leave a legacy of love.

When our children tell their children about who we were,
will they speak with pride and admiration
in frequent and bittersweet conversation?
Or will they prefer to try to forget
the person they wished they’d never met.
This is something we all must contemplate ...
We have a choice ~ and it’s never too late.

The legacy we leave is more than just
a memory we leave behind ...
It’s a piece of ourselves which will last forever.
It’s the reason for our lives and what we’ve gone through.
We can make a difference by the way we live ...
Let’s turn our hearts to our children,
and teach them by our example to love and forgive.
It’s never too late to make a difference.

Light dawns in the darkness for the upright ...
It is well with our soul and the pain can cease,
knowing we are leaving behind this righteous legacy.
This is the meaning of life.
This is how we go in peace ...
~ and it’s never too late

This is so powerful and deep. The message is right to the point and truthful. We only have one life to live, and we need to make sure we leave behind a good impression. nice job

Words of wisdom. Thought legacies scare me, when I think of people trying too hard to be something they are not. Is it better to have loved and left nothing behind? This poem makes me think so that makes it wonderful. Thank you ~ Kilmer

Becca; I agree with you. It's never too late as long as we are alive. I always say - if we don't have riches to leave our family - than let's leave them good memories. So go out with them and make memories that they can keep forever.... Thanks for sharing.... Lucilla

There are a few poems when taken together express the meaning of life. You have done well. Forgiveness is much more important than hate. A wonderful message.

I think I'm going to arrange my own funeral just so I can be there to hear what the kids do have to say lol, then change my will accordingly haha. It's not a preachy poem more an advisory, which I completely agree with and very well written and presented too. Take care, Richard

haha Yes wouldn't it be nice if we could attend our own funerals, then we'd know who is worthy of the inheritance :) Thank you, Richard ... always great to hear from you.

You didn't have to explain it's all in your poetry. Keep writing me like.

Thank you, Sean .. and you know... you're right, I read somewhere that a poet shouldn't try to explain why their wrote their poetry. I've decided to delete the commentary. Thank you :)

yes, Charmaine! Forgiving is freeing. Very difficult to do sometimes, but so much better to forgive than to hold on to bitterness. Thank you so much Charmaine, you've been a good friend to me, I'll never forget your kindness.

Great message, it makes me think of the sad legacy my dad left behind. We weep for the person he could have been. Now when we close our eyes we are no longer afraid of the dark.

ps I'm not saying that I wrote this about you and your father, I hope it didn't sound like that was what I'm saying. I just mean, your past came to mind as I was writing it. xoxox

To be honest Rick, I thought of you and your father when I was writing this. I'm sorry he didn't leave a better legacy, but isn't it great that you have overcome that and you can change it. hugs

Yes. A massive message that all should place in their pocket for safe keeping & occasional reminders when reflecting within self.

An occasional reminder never hurts... it's a hard concept to grasp and very hard to do, forgiving those who have hurt you, especially when they have not asked for forgiveness. Thanks for stopping by.
