A Love at the Door

It was hardly a day
Since my love and I parted
And yet my heart
Was heavy with longing

The pain of living
Without her, my love
Has he ever loved
Who’s never missed his sweetheart
No, I could stand it no more
The sorrow I carried in my heart
Weighed heavier and heavier
Till my feet, my joints ached

And I could have sold my fortune
For a glimpse of that lovely face again
I could have betrayed the oath
And auctioned the kingdom to come

I gazed out of the window
Recounted episodes of childhood
When mother was away
And the wind carried scents of mango

‘Come in!’ I shouted
Yet no one had knocked
It was little cupid
At his crafty games again

I picked up ‘The Exorcist’, flipped a leaf
“…and she doesn’t believe me,”
Stuck in my throat
Would my day-long depression now lift?

I put the novel down
Turned to the typewriter
‘To be thus is nothing to be thus
Is nothing to be thus…”
Knock! Knock! Knock!

This is a very poignant verse. It is well crafted and the emotion driving it reminds me of "Prophecy"..... A poem I wrote some time ago. You might enjoy reading it.... Jake
