EMIGRANT

EMIGRANT

The wake stretched from the bow
Back towards the narrow, choked
Canal systems of Europe.
Goodbye to endless locks now.

We were ready for the new start.

Over the damp taffrail - foam.

And ahead lay the United States
And home.

..................
NOTE
The last four lines are taken from Chapter 10 of “The Professor
and the Madman” by Simon Winchester,
