Medic

The stench
Those small fat ugly things
That crawl out from the wound
The ghastly sight of putrid flesh
Beneath that silver moon.
It's Three am, I'm roused from sleep
To tend the ills of war
I smile bravely as the whisper says
"You ain't no child no more"

A dying man lies silently
The bravest of the brave
He be the enemy most foul
But his life I must save
So many boys be dying now
For fools and their ideas
Yet I be there to do a job
No room for baby tears.

I do my thing
A robot man
This tough old digger me
They've taught me well
To block my heart
A soldier now I be.
I cradle him within my arms
This man I helped to kill.
It seems I think of him a lot
And I guess I always will.

 1997.

Peter you took me into the mind of a man who needs to pour his soul out... deep and dramatic imagery. painful, I wish we could stop the tears, of the young ones, and open our eyes, to heal and help all. thank you for sharing. *luv ~ SKAT ~

Thank you Skat. I think that I am lucky to be able to pour my heart and soul out in poem. I think that anyone who has been involved in a war, has to let it out or suffer forever. I now stand up for peace, it is the only way to sanity...Loved your comments Peter
