I WANT WHAT I CAN'T HAVE

I am contrary and obstinate
I refuse to become a part of the new
advanced age the competition
to see who can care the less
Who can go through life acquainting themselves
with the fewest number of people
Who can destroy the greatest amount
of our precious natural resources

I am backwards and incredibly naive
because I still believe in hope and innocence
and the endless possibilities of life
when viewed through the rose colored
			eyes of a child

I want to live in a world
which no longer exists
fueled by honest morals
and Godly values
and true neighborly love
which has become extinct

A world where doing a line meant
chalking in a hopscotch square
Cooking up something at a party was making
Incredible Edibles in an Easy Bake oven
or roasting hot dogs over an open fire

A world where the only popping heard
in quiet neighborhoods on Friday nights
was Jiffy Pop popcorn on the stove
and no one ducked for cover when the foil split

Block parties were still held on streets not in prisons
Neighbors borrowed eggs and coffee and child share time
not your husband because they were lonely
and had an itch that needed scratching just right

A time when people were beautiful
vibrant individuals not dull clones
Designer clothes embodied a person's unique vision
brought to life with needle and embroidery thread

A time when friends were simply friends
and not your home-boys
They kept secrets about first crushes
not being an accessory to first murder

People said far out groovy peace
and have a nice day
not slurs barbs and insults
on the person and their entire ancestry

I want what I can't have
so I will settle for what I can find
I will step backwards and sideways
I will look for it
in the mountains and meadows
in quiet country towns
and in the eyes of passers-by

Amazing write, Monterey! I'm part of the Now Generation, but I feel in a lot of ways I'm very old fashioned. Technology hates me, and I LOVE wearing those rose colored glasses. I just wish the world was a bit less superficial... oh well. I guess if you want the world to change you have to start with yourself... adding this one to my favorites!

Beautifully written... It's still out there. Just harder to find in some spots than others.

Yeah, I guess the things we have to search the hardest for are the ones we appreciate most.
