Tired of Sterilized Poetry

Tired of sterilized poetry
And endless odes to beauty
Though life is so full of these
And everything sweet to please
There is a much darker side
Where sorrow and pain reside
Where shattered dreams do haunt
Rejection and madness taunt

Tired of sterilized poetry
That tells an idyllic story
Where life's as it’s meant to be
And sunshine is all you see
What about the living hell
Souls under an evil spell
Where fear rears its morbid head
Monsters terrorize in bed

Tired of sterilized poetry
Where love’s a sweet mystery
Passion’s power is hush hush
Euphemisms used too much
Where people do not care
Their souls’ desires to bare
So afraid of being real
Or allowing hearts to feel

I’m tired of sterilized poetry
That shows the hero’s glory
Ignores the losers who bleed
And the hungry ones in need
That pretends life is alright
And there is no endless night
That’s perfumed with flowers fair
Not the stench of evil’s lair

I’m tired of sterilized poetry
A fairytale like story
What of the blood, sweat and tears
And the tales of wasted years
Betrayal sealed with a kiss
Everything good gone amiss

I’m tired of sterilized poetry
There’s more of what’s meant to be
Let poems speak of real life
Highlight agony and strife
Shades of sexuality
Degrees of conformity
Speak of you and speak of me
The thirst for eternity.

It is well crafted and worded polemically, but after all, what is "sterilized poetry"? Maybe the expression "idealized poetry" would fit more comprehensively in there? I smile because I liked it a lot. Diligent work, indeed. G.

Great way to discuss it through your poetry. Unfortunately it's a talent I lack. I can't seem to write about many deep dark things that are personal . maybe because I have not had many in my life. 'and the few I have, I try to write about them and it is impossible. So I imagine the dark things that I write about instead!! I think variety is the spice of life, and I love reading and writing in all forms and about all topics!

You're certainly out there Eileen. I do love an opinionated strong woman lol. Especially one with a great sense of humour and something to say. Don't make you always right though hmmmm. I do agree sterilized poetry can leave so much reality out of writes, the balance is difficult to achieve. Take care, Richard

OH...I fit this category, do I? What an honor! Thank you kindly! Just to amend your statement...I'M ALWAYS RIGHT! ;) Yes...the balance is tough. Oh well...we strive to reach that lovely middle ground!

Fantastic Poem and I could not agree more with the sentiments in it more. If we want to increase the readership of poetry today, more emphasis has to be placed on all things people can relate to and done with soul, passion, and substance. Meter and rhyme is pretty, but pretty is not enough when it is at the expense of stronger, more soul stirring, more passionate, and more descriptive lines. Kim

Welcome! Glad to ready your post and to know that you have read my poem! :) Yes, it is true, indeed. Sometimes we get scared of leaving ourselves vulnerable, but if we don't risk, we don't progress! :)

You are so correct, and I have written the other side many times--they don't seem to be well accepted but I'll write them anyway on occasion because they must be written although I've always been a glass is half full guy so they are 90% fiction---but then, if I can write it?? Great thoughts here Eileen.

Wow...how fortunate are you! Half full all the time and purely fiction! Hmmmmm...you are on a whole new sphere than I am! I know they aren't well accepted, but I write for I must! I have no other option! Thanks for the visit! :)

I'm sooooo with you on this score, Eileen. Geez, how much more can be said about how beautiful a world we live in? Your refrain adds that much more volume to your poem. Lovely write, my friend. Licia :-)

Agreed. Fully. Do not lip sync the songs of another, for there is little meaning. Write your own lyrics and sing to the world, from within. Respect to you for this honest piece.

Wow, Eileen... this was amazing! And I so agree with you. Though I do tend like some of that stuff I feel it goes a bit overboard sometimes... it feels unrealistic and not something that grabs your attention to make you think about things. I think a lot of people that don't practice the art, think that IS what poetry is... a lot of fluff and peachiness. I see you're keeping it real... well done! Besides sterilization is bad for the body internally, I hear...

Timothy!!!! You are a kindred spirit though I need to get you a little more into the mush pit! No...not the mosh pit, though I doubt you'd get into one of those anyway! ;) Oh...I love the peachiness...you now that...but sometimes I bleed. No...that isn't the red rose...or some other such thing..that is BLOOD from my heart! ;) Oh well...thanks for the visit!
