Naming Fish

People often get stuck on what to call their fish
and in many cases come up with ridiculous things.
They imagine some kind of greatness, attached to
naming, and they name them Moby, or Jaws, or Hannibal.

Some are poetic and flowing like water- Eulalie
or Aolani( Ay-o-lawn-ee) which means "Heavenly Cloud."

Some joke, and call them Sushi or Chips
which no self respecting pet suspects the meaning of …..
or, they invoke nature -
Bubbles and Starlight or Pearl.

Once, I knew a puffer fish named Toto.

:D :D I had a pond a few years ago and had fish and named them and they would come right over when I walked to the pond and actually eat out of my hand. The little girl next door would come every day for what we called fish kisses because they would nibble on the ends of her fingers. I like the name of the goldfish in What About Bob "Gill" and in Rocky he called his turtles Cuff and Link!!

I find it strange how people can honestly call them "pets". Unless you can corner the fish, in his bowl, and caress the fish with your thumb, they are not technically a "pet", but a decoration in the room. I never know what to expect when I read from you... I love your random sense of topics, Suzanne :)

This is fun, you are right the fish don't give a dam. I guess naming started in the Garden of Eden as God brought each animal to Adam so he could name them. Old habits I guess.

I had to laugh when I read this poem Suz because of the silly names my daughter gives all her fish. She named one Mellow Yellow and I got to remembering them by their names because she always talked about them. It was so funny and I think I will send her this poem because she will totally identify with the humor in it. One day she called me and said Mellow Yellow is missing, I hope he isn't dead. Loved it!

i would never even think to name my fish. Most boring pets ever. haha. But I sure enjoyed this poem. Makes me wonder what I might name MY fish if I were to do it.

Eulalie means nice-voice. I enjoyed your cute analysis and free verse, and while enjoying I thought how happy a smart pet will be when given a charismatic name. How about "psaraki"? It means little fish. :)

We have close to 40 fish in our pond. My wife gave up on naming them along time ago.
