The Lure of Society's Ills

A creature lurks with a formidable eye
using bright color as a disguise
the sting of the fire breathing mastadon
seals the fate of a life gone wrong

Demonic pleasures to be obtained
through taboo-stricken means
and the real scheme being
there's such pleasure to be gained

Larger doses surrender you faster
numb and quell, but quickley to pass
spinning the charms of cursed masters
who seldom watch the hourglass

The excitement woos, enticing your will
now duped, you believe the feeling is real
black widows with venom bring darkness near
into the solemn night, no soft voices here

Intoxication weave's it's heavy glow
as you slither away with no one in tow
going...going...a long way to go,
trapped in time's disturbing woe
under the midnight mural

I like everything about this. Subject matter, imagery, form, delivery - everything flows smoothly in a heavy and dark manner.

"trapped in time's disturbing woe"-- Are you kidding me; are you serious? MAN, OH, MAN I wish I had penned that line! It's sickeningly good. The last stanza was suuuuuuu-perb! No, my dear; YOU are the brilliant one. For the love of God and sake of Pete: POST MORE! I need more, Karen!!!!

MC, thank you for enjoying my poetry. I have written down thoughts (off and on) in a journal for several years. Sometimes they just write themselves into a poem. Thank you for your kind comments :)

Larger doses do surrender you faster! It's a shame we all have a yearning to be numbed, and many numb it with addiction. Awesome poem, I enjoyed it! - Patrick Farley IV

What can I say that hasn't already been said. Brilliant. Looking through life through the bottom of a glass makes for a myopic view of life. Nice work as usual! Kilmer

gosh, there is one bad habit that came to my mind reading this one. But is it also discussing some other things? I can think of a few other ills of society when I read this. Great imagery!

I love the gothic mysticism in this composition Karen - we lose ourselves through pleasure, and find ourselves in pain - reminds me of entrapment via unsolicited reincarnation - neat ritual element - J.A.B. %

Well, I've read his three times and still don't get why it's so good, maybe that's because it's an absolute stunner lol. You're a very talented lady Karen. I steered well clear of this scene, though I know some that did not and the damage it can do. I will return for more. Take care, Richard.
