Pounding those Keys

Wow come over here
Check out this black beauty
Grandpa used to have one just like it
It sat on the desk in his study
In fact I was supposed to study in his study
In reality I never did get much done

Transported back in time
What a remarkable piece of equipment
With it's qwerty keyboard
I love the feel of the lacquered keys
Pushing them down one at a time
Watching as the metal rods strikes the roller
Next I push all the keys down at once
The rods collecting in a jumbled mass
Carefully untangling
Rolling a piece of paper into place
Dropping the guide over the page
Readied hands
Fingers pounding in rapid succession
Then the bell
Ding!
Like Mohamed Ali advancing to the next round
Sliding the chrome lever
Carriage returning to it's starting point
Page moves up one line
Over and over again
Until my page is filled
Pulled out with glee
There on the page
Letters perfectly formed
Yet there are no words
I do not know how to type
But that is okay
This is a lot of fun

Jolted back to the present
With a simple question
"Would you like to buy?"
What are you asking?
"A hundred and a half."
How about one twenty five?
"Okay."
Off I go typewriter in hand
Mohamad Ali is back in the ring
Clickty click clickty click click
He can still take a pounding
Ding!
Once again
Saved by the bell

This really brings out the definition of the old typewriter. I loved hearing that bell ring at the end of each typed sentence. Your take on this makes that old typewriter so much more awesome!

This was a really fun piece to read. I felt like I was there, plucking randomly at those keys. Antique-type things have always held a certain fascination for me. Though I've never actually used an old-fashioned typewriter, I've seen one before and imagined myself using it. But, alas, I'm spoiled by the backspace button, and would probably suck at using it... lol. I hope you win on the contest... this is something I wish I wrote!

Thanks Tim, I get a kick out of old things as well. My mom is mostly retired from the antique business but still has stuff at a few places about Kitchener Ontario.

I agree with my good friend, Guru Jad. Richard, I hope you always treasure this gift or writing that you possess. It is amazing. Yes, I've hit all the keys at the same time to see them all get stuck. I wonder...what is behind that act. ;) Nice to wonder.

You are surely a talented poet. You possess the ability to change present and past and to lead your audience into the world you exactly like them to visualize!!

Thanks Delysia. You look to young for a typewriter to be part of your writing days. Thanks for visiting.
