Asleep with Eyes Open

He sits in a chair
Looking out to nowhere
Haunted blank stare
Open eyes unaware

Sitting in a chair with wheels
No one knows what he feels
Is there anything for him that's real

A young girl visits every day
She hates to see him this way
He used to have so much to say
She longs for him to be okay

His body is near
Yet his mind isn't here
locked away by fear
Look close you may see a tear

Through his darkness he hears her voice
Awakened he makes a choice
His dry tongue becomes moist

Back to reality
From the brink of infinity
Her love sets him free
Brings him where he's supposed to be

He paid a terrible cost
So many years were lost
A mind locked in frost

The victim of war
Shook to his core
He couldn't take anymore
So his mind shut the door

Finally he is awake
First tentative steps to make
She holds him as he starts to shake
Yes they have a new journey to take

A soul awakened contest.

Hi Richard, this one really moved me. It's funny in a way, it's just like reading what I fear most for myself. It would be so easy for me to withdraw into myself, but I know if I did I would never get out again. I had a tear on this one my friend. Once again the poem is deep and it is written so well. This piece just flows gently along like all your work I have read so far. A complete vision, a man trapped in his own Hell who finally releases his mind. I enjoyed the read....MIKE.

Hahaha... I've heard ditto before! It's not very common, but I remember saying it a lot when I was around ten or so.

Amazing....I know that blank expression well. I saw it in my Mom's eyes often when MS would become exacerbated. I wanted to shake her "awake". It stung. This brings memories. The mind...a terrible thing to lose. Very extremely well written...to the point of bringing tears

Also... about the new avatar. It was very cold where I was at. I thought it was time for a new picture, and I felt my older pic was too somber. Photos, in my opinion, should show a person smiling (for the most part anyway).

Asleep with eyes open... such a cool contradiction, that is. I'm left to wander the things he has witnessed, the things he did, that would leave him to this chronic state of depression. It shows just how hard moving on is for some people...
