Thankful for the Poet

Your captivating sonnet, a single verse then
two, the words I write seem not quite right
compared to the ones from you
I've often used too many, and consume your
point of view, your ability to say so much
by using just a few

Thank you Mr. Shakespeare for a friend I met
today, because of you she's come from many
miles away. I frolic in your descriptions
of each and every noun, as each verse bursts
and like a poor beggar, quenches my thirst

I thank Mr. Poe for his stories of woe that
deeply stirs my raven soul, coercing the
sadness out of the quills, convincing me that
time kills, love heals, color spills…

I begin to write my single verse, that
might turn into two, I savor a rarest gift,
the one that came from you. I take a turn,
my desire’s to please, but discover as I
write the poem, the poetry writes me

that last line is stunning, and I really enjoyed this poem dedicated to the sonnet form. THere is simply nothing like a well written sonnet. It's succinct and yet can be so full of imagery!

I love what poetry means to me and what it does to me. The feelings that pour our and are newly composed. You are right words come together to make and make a poem.. my life painted from black and white. awesome poem.... Linda

Hi Karen I love the words of Shakespeare and Poe and I like your poem and the final line. I wrote a blog recently that explains how free verse works differently than rhyme in the shaping of poem outcomes. if you want to check it out look in my past blogs for One titled," How form changes content." I can really relate to what you're saying here. Sometimes when I write something I honestly wonder where the words came from. One of the saddest things I ever wrote came to me when I was completely content with myself. Love where your mind went with this, also a nice tribute to the classics... Shakespeare and Poe.
