I believe this moment of wisdom came just as I realized I was finally catching on to the proper way to create Haiku..... Jake

I used to stick to 5-7-5, but I found the rule too limiting. The Japanese wrote their haiku using 5-7-5, however when you translate them into English they usually end up being much shorter. You can write them either way, but if you ever write a haiku that doesn't follow the rule, I'd still keep the poem!

You are correct in your evaluation of syllable count in Haiku composing. I notice many haikus posted do not hold to the 5-7-5 pattern. I choose to stay with the 5-7-5 pattern. For me, it presents a greater challenge... Thanks for your input. Great respect for your talent..... Jake

This is one of my favorite haiku from you. Though if I may make a suggestion I believe you could make even better by shortening it. For example... "a light bulb flickers above my head - enlightenment". Just my thoughts, however! Love your work :)

Thanks, I was trying to stick to what I believe to be the textbook syllable count of 5-7-5... I could be mistaken.... Jake

Thanks-you are quite bright and so right! I love this metaphor. The process of becoming enlightened is a long one, but it's funny that there is a sign to announce it so clearly once it has been achieved.
