Writing Freedom Songs For Myself, 1991

the sunrises were golden and purple every day of this January

i leave my sandstone home in the ink-dark

i hope that by being with these young bright skeptical souls a mere seven hours a day

i have changed their worlds

they have no idea how much i want the universe to be a friendly place for them

The skies are changing and it makes me think about the skies over Michigan and Kentucky

More often than not,

I find less of an enemy in my mirror

I see someone whose better acquaintance I desire

My heart only remembers its old pains

in the dark of a moonless night for a few spaced beats

Under the changing skies I mark off eons

on my paperboard calendar and hope

that with every small task completed, every small mile passed

I am in one way, true way, my way, helping in changing the world.
