Goodbye To the Penny

Goodbye to the Penny

By Elton Camp

Logical argument tells me it ought to go
However, I sorta hate to see it become so

The penny isn’t even of copper they say
And costs more than a cent to make today

The coin’s value has become so small
Why bother to pick them up if they fall

To pockets and purses they add weight
To get them in change, many sure hate

A single drop of gas one might buy
For a piece of candy, don’t even try

Nickel rounding comes if they disappear
But such a small amount is little to fear

But all my life, pennies have been in use
That I’d miss them isn’t much excuse

In economic reality we have to agree
Abolishing the penny is going to be

In some coins passed to me from my grandparents are large, copper cents, two-cent pieces, half-cents, and Civil War tokens that resemble pennies but that I have read were privately minted during the Civil War. Elton

Thanks for reading. A short while after I wrote this, we went to Wal Mart and picked up a penny we found lying outside the exit. Elton

I recall that also. And I remember when, for one year during WW II steel pennies appeared. But I WAS just a little kid. Elton
