About This Poem

Breath

It's happened to me only once.
I was so close
to a woman I barely knew
(I can’t recall what we were discussing)
that her warm breath,
wafting across my cheek for an instant as we talked,
recalled the delicate fragrance of roses.
It might have been her lipstick,
but I prefer to believe
it was her inner beauty
unintentionally shared with me
for a moment.
Whatever the source,
the experience remains a
unique recollection that doesn’t begin to suffice
for being in the moment of her breath.

Thank you. Fragments of memory may not be exactly factual, but it really doesn't matter in the end. J
