About This Poem

Shaft of Light

The earthquake came without a warning
On that terrible Monday morning
When the ground shook the building collapsed
moments like hours as time elapsed

There I was trapped under the rubble
Some how protected in a bubble
Living a nightmare fully reclined
In a space only partially defined

How am I still alive?
Is there anyone out there?
It is so dark
Oh so dark
God please help me
Mary I love you
Why am I still alive?
I am so glad to be alive

Darkness just darkness
hand held out in front of eyes---
Water drips on face

Now I have a way to sustain life
I want to reunite with my wife
Lonely hours soon turn into days
Here in the rubble I lay and pray

Tap, tap, tap, I hear a distant sound
Is it possible I will be found?
My heart beating fast filled with new glee
There are still people looking for me

Miracle moment a shaft of light
It hurts my eye because it's so bright
When I see a face I start to cry
This hole not my tomb I didn't die

I wrote for the shaft of light contest before reading directions. Oops
Three forms, Rhyme, Free Verse and Haiku.
