About This Poem
The Forgotten Valentine
She sits all alone with her book on her lap
Her cat curled up by her side
Reading, a welcome retreat from this world
She sighs deeply and closes her eyes
Today’s the 14th, she thinks to herself
For her, it’s a day filled with pain
A cruel reminder that she’s without love
Another day, all just the same
The only valentine she’ll have this year
Is the one she creates in her mind
Her imagination can run wild and free
But still, it hurts, every time
“If only”… her thoughts take her back to that place
If only I were pretty and thin
Then maybe someone would want to know me
And the love that I carry within
But this seems to be an impossible dream
She’s felt like this all of her life
Never accepted, admired, or loved
Because beauty had left her behind
Someday she hopes to find someone
On whom she could depend
To know the beauty she has in her soul
And to feel lonely never again
But for today, this painful day
A girl who should be adored
Will sit by herself, a lonely girl
A forgotten valentine, once more
2/2/2013 for the Forgotten Valentine contest ~~ Sadly, we live in a superficial world, where people are often admired not for their character or lovely personalities but for their physical attributes….
