About This Poem

The Forgotten Valentine

She sits all alone with her book on her lap
Her cat curled up by her side
Reading, a welcome retreat from this world
She sighs deeply and closes her eyes

Today’s the 14th, she thinks to herself
For her, it’s a day filled with pain
A cruel reminder that she’s without love
Another day, all just the same

The only valentine she’ll have this year
Is the one she creates in her mind
Her imagination can run wild and free
But still, it hurts, every time

“If only”… her thoughts take her back to that place
If only I were pretty and thin
Then maybe someone would want to know me
And the love that I carry within

But this seems to be an impossible dream
She’s felt like this all of her life
Never accepted, admired, or loved
Because beauty had left her behind

Someday she hopes to find someone
On whom she could depend
To know the beauty she has in her soul
And to feel lonely never again

But for today, this painful day
A girl who should be adored
Will sit by herself, a lonely girl
A forgotten valentine, once more

2/2/2013 for the Forgotten Valentine contest ~~ Sadly, we live in a superficial world, where people are often admired not for their character or lovely personalities but for their physical attributes….

I've always thought Valentines Day was kinda superficial as well... it seems it's all "Buy! Buy! Buy!"... why should one wait for a holiday to happen to give someone flowers or chocolate? Just my thoughts... I enjoyed your piece.

AND SADLY....SOMETIMES that is all some have...is their Physical Attributes...And then age comes along...ad steals that away...leaving them feeling more superficial than ever...

Beautifully sad poem Becca. I checked this poem out because of your comment on my FB page - I am glad that I did. You are right, it is very similar to my "Skin Deep" poem and I think you did a terrific job (better than I) in communicating your message. Nicely done. I think the world has too many forgotten Valentines - and that is a shame. Joe

I believe this is true for some people but thankfully there are many who see past the physical to where the true beauty lies. There are many people in our lives that become more and more attractive as we get to know them, men and women alike. I have known some physically attractive people who have had the exact opposite effect as well. The thing with outward beauty is that regardless how much there is it will fade and then what is left?

Wow, now this is an extremely powerful write my friend! I am amazed with the emotion that you filled within this write and the image you painted of this depressed, lonely girl! She doesn't deserve this sadness, but you are right, this world can be a cruel place, a superficial world for sure! You painted a perfect picture with this lovely poem! What an amazing piece, Great Work!!
