Beliefs

What are beliefs?

Are they childhood sayings once heard?
Or teachings of others you have observed

Are they just thoughts manifested within?
Or memories of times waiting to begin

Are they someone you hope to become?
Or life challenges that you’ve overcome

Are they recent meditations of so and so?
Or handy witticisms recalled from long ago

Are they juxtaposed words seen on a page?
Or suggestions of a has-been off-stage?

Are they cries of ancient voices long dead?
Or a book of cryptic texts you once read

Are they pop culture’s newest trivial award?
Or scholarship’s "most prestigious" reward

Are they an innate talent received at birth?
Or simply common sense of highest worth

No matter how defined they remain unclear
For in life as in death they’ll soon disappear
