About This Poem
Without a Song
I tried to write a song
So I could treasure it forever
The words came from my heart
And I thought that I would never
Feel as happy as I did the day
That I sat down to write
It was a time when things were hopeful
And the future was so bright
The words I wrote meant something
That was special and so true
And I put it to some music
That was special to me too
It was music that I needed
To make my song complete
Music that I thought had come
From feelings that were deep
But I had written prematurely
And I started getting clues
That instead of singing songs of hope
I should have sung the blues
The words I thought reflected truth
Were somehow not in tune
With the music that I thought was love
I had sung them much too soon
Someday I’ll have a melody
To which I can sing along
But I guess for now my life will be
Without the music or a song
