Less Than a Penny
There are a few things
For under a nickel;
Like a lone Chicklet,
Or a sliced pickle.
But there’s so much more
For less than a penny.
You don’t think there’s any?
Well I can list many.
How ‘bout a smile, a hug,
Most kinds of bugs.
Read a book, write a letter;
Do you need something better?
Blow your nose, scratch your toes,
Or donate old clothes.
Dig a hole with a bowl,
Not sing like Nat Cole.
You can climb up a mountain
And drink from a fountain.
Walk through the mall
In winter through fall.
Snap both of your fingers,
Throw horseshoe ringers.
Roll one eye or two;
Those are some things I do.
For less than a Lincoln,
A penny, one cent.
Is the list running thin?
Did I yet, make a dent?
There’s no mystery,
With the pleasures of free.
There’s infinite value
In a touch or a smile.
So repeat after me
And check history;
That the best things in life
Are less than a penn-y!
You can laugh in the dark,
Or cry in a park.
Say no when you’d like,
And call someone Mike.
Bend down at the waist,
Or take off in haste.
Listen to thunder,
Dream about plunder.
Win at tic-tac-toe,
Learn how to sew.
Whittle a stick,
Spell lickety-split.
Wear something drab,
And pick at a scab.
Jump in a quarry,
Or read this story.
For less than a Lincoln,
A penny, one cent,
That’s what I was thinking;
Now you know what I meant.
There’s no mystery,
About what’s for free.
There’s infinite value
In a touch or a smile.
So repeat after me
And check history.
That the best things in life
Are less than a penn-y!
