Two very close friends,
in a moment of aesthetic passion,
consent to self-imposed pain.
They both know what is to come,
guilt for one and shame for the other,
and they know their efforts will be unrewarded.
They know not why they bothered,
did not even try to lie to themselves,
and yet wilfully punished one-another.
Neither had committed any wrong,
and know that not only was it unnecessary,
but that they did not deserve it.
The one turns to the other,
"You need not feel as you do, everything is all right".
Then the other turns to the one,
"I am aware that nothing is all right for now, but it will be".
