Mirror, Lie to Me

I stare at my mirror
So shocked by what I see
There is a strange woman
Staring right back at me

I must’ve been abducted
This must be a crazy trick
For the reflection that I see
Is making me quite sick

Are those horrid wrinkles?
Is that a double chin?
The neck that was my joy
Is pillar like- not thin!

My eyes have no sparkle
They look listless and glazed
Perhaps it’s hard to focus
When I feel so dazed

Maybe it’s just a dream
From which I will awake
For how could that be me?
I’m sure it’s just a fake

I pinch myself real hard
The mirror woman screams
Oh no, it must be true
Now both of us cry streams

Mirror, you’re a traitor!!!
Mirror, this is a crime!!!
I order you to hide!!!
The tell-tale signs of time!!!

Do me a small favor
Tell me a little lie
Reflect a younger me…
Oh please, give it a try!

From my experience women at every age fail to recognize their beauty. I wrote a poem called Mirror imagine which is not on this site. I wrote it for Eating Disorder Awareness week. The point is we need to find a way to see our beauty apart from our youth worshipping culture. I can assure you the beauty is there I have witnessed my wife become increasingly beautiful over our 20 years together.

mirror is a time where we reflect our timeless inner beauty ...... mirror is a mystery where horizontal axis of time reverses but vertical axis of timelessness remains same .....so a very fine poem of human emotions expressed with fine poem ...... thanks ...... love all.

I believe we like to see ourselves in a mirror's image. You write well about what you see, or don't see, reflected there. I have written a couple you might like... try "Reflection" and "A Look At Myself" posted in my portfolio. They are both reflections I see..... Love Ya Much.... Jake

I would never see the image of you as you see it In the mirror! What I’ll see is the beautiful soul that has sacrificed herself to make you what you are today in your life i.e. what you have achieved. I enjoyed it, made me smile and still smiling! Wonderfully written! Thank you! Para poly kala!

yes, some days it can be scary!! I know that feeling, but gosh, I hope it isn't as bad as this for you very often. I think a lot of it has to do with how you are just feeling on a certain day. anyway, writing a poem like this is a great way to let it out!!! well done.

Excellent commentary on the contrary state of aging my friend. I often feel the same way when I look at a photo of me and wonder who that old geezer is! Loved it, Curt
