The Paradox of Love

We love those who don’t love us
And we don’t love those who do
We long for the unfaithful
And neglect those who are true

We give to those who have no need
And withhold from those who do
We run after those who run away
And run away from ones who pursue

We flirt with those who are aloof
And are aloof with those who flirt
We treat like gold the worthless
And the worthy we treat like dirt

We die for those who’re indifferent
And are indifferent to those who die
Tis the state of our foolish hearts
Will someone please to tell me why?

He says I am his heart and soul
You’re indifferent to my needs
He vows he’d die without my love
Yet it’s for you my heart bleeds

He claims I’m his oxygen
Carbon dioxide I am to you
His eyes want to eat me up
YOU’RE my honey through and through

My foolish heart has lost its wits
The world has gone crazy too
I love him who loves me not
Tell me, is this true for you?

Hmmmmmmm...your post is intriguing LM. I wonder what it all means. The paradox is what it is...Right? Now...where did I hear/read that before? ;)

Eileen, epic poem. When I wasn't writing, I was a Marriage and Family Therapist. You nailed the issues of unconscious, self-defeating ways of loving. Interested if you checked out my poems: WITHIN and CHEMISTRY. I think they dovetail with your marvelous poem.

Eileen, it has been true for me all of my life! In your poems, you have a way of involving the reader subtly, but very ingeniously, and you certainly do it here. I always find something with which to resonate in all of your writes. -Dean

Very similar to the "women who love bad boys" theme.. and oh so true. Beautiful expression of a confusing yet prevalent phenomena...a 7 for sure

What a crazy world we live in. And the school of hard knocks we have to go through. I pray that you will let your inner heart of wisdom guide you through your life's journey so you can avoid the storms so many of us struggle through. Enjoyed your poem and how true.

Circumstances shape our lives, Anne Lise. Some truth in every poem, and then sometimes you add things to get the point truly across. My prince is here.... :)
