About This Poem

Penny

the shade of her skin was darker than mine
for that some believed her heart held a crime

being black and a girl was her only real sin
her inner beauty shined from within

messages of hate passed by note or by sound
defeated my nature and so wore me down

a cold lonely classroom where nobody cared
for the quiet caring hearts never quite dared

If you had somehow gotten some native "culture" into this , it would have been on the top. Very well done.BG

Thanks barbara. I looked at the word culture and was flooded with these previous experiences, one of which is discussed in the poem. I'd like to be able to say growing up near an aboriginal settlement that I was exposed to the native culture - and to a good degree I am sure I was. However, at a conscious level I was certainly aware of the 'culture' of abuse , neglect and ignorance. Unfortunately, the term references the sentiment in this country.

Thanks for the HM Debbie. Yeah, it kinda felt a bit off topic when I entered it.
