Ode to an impostor

What smug pseudomorph inhabits my reflection,
adroitly mimicking my every manner and expression,
mercilessly mocking me with flawless simulation?

She is the great pretender;
a master counterfeiter;
a furtive opportunist;
a thieving imitator.

She is a soul-sucking demon of the gravest degree;
a predatory parasite dining on youth and ingeny.
She pillages my health with brazen meretricity;
siphoning my precious hollow of vitality.

Time ticks across my aging face
while our eyes lock in defiance,
and in the end, my spurious friend
will demand my full compliance.

So, with a twinkling eye I wink at my mirrored facade,
acknowledging this fearsome foe with a playful nod.
Respectfully reciprocal, she gestures back to me in kind,
and we part as esteemed enemies, to my last breath resigned.

    Great write on a topic which touches many lives. I am pleased to have met you and have the pleasure of looking forward to many more offerings from your talented pen, Thvia. I do not fear aging, but the day I looked in the mirror and my mother looked back at me, I decided it was time for a total makeover... :-) I love your playful portrayal of your acceptance of what we cannot after all not change. ~ Su

    Ah yes, aging, the passage of time -- I suppose the purpose for writing this poem in the first place, could be to face it, and face it positively, as your end-stanza reflects. Just look at Harry's nice comment. How can anyone top that? Well, from the first poems of yours that I read, I could tell right away how you are a sharp writer, and it shows here once again. Now, take the come-back momentum and keep going with it :D

    You're spot on with my purpose here Chris. Funnily enough, I'm working on something right this moment but it seems to be taking its time coming together. I hope to post it tonight but it's still a ways off. Maybe tomorrow is a more reasonable time frame. Thank you for always leaving me with kindness and encouragement.

    Is it an imposter or a stalker... relentlessly clinging like an anchor... pulling down, down, down... until you both cease... together and forever... Terry (exquisite poem... glad I've discovered you)
