Imagine - If It All Ends this Way

Imagine all those things we love so well - the scent of sweet perfume or baking bread - have disappeared; we’ve lost our sense of smell, and with that loss, fond memories have fled! We must learn to adapt but are still graced with an ability we can’t believe is soon to perish too - our sense of taste! All food now loses flavor, and we grieve. But the worst is yet to come, and what we fear arrives one day, and all the world must mourn, for not one soul is able now to hear! We stay with loved ones not to be forlorn and cling to them when comes the loss of sight. . . our final plight - to fade into the night. *The other day I watched a movie on cable called Perfect Sense. It inspired me to write this poem. Just think of it - to lose our senses one by one until the only thing left is to cling to a loved one. That was a very intense movie!

I can't believe I missed this one the first time around. As someone who loves reading, painting, singing, etc., I think you have described my worst nightmare here! Fantastic job! And to answer your question on my kimo - I was actually imagining the lake as an open wound, which is why I described the lake water as blood... Yep, my imagination is kinda wacky sometimes!

Good food for thought. As one not getting any younger, I must say that all of these senses are on the wane, most only mildly, but I can imagine a total loss. Love, daver

love the different pace you express here.. a strong image if we fall into it one day... i wish to fade into this night... I learned how to accept if and when it ends this way... dark seeds one can ignite on such a final plight... always~ pd

Sounds like a great movie. You asked me a while back if my woes started from the broken neck and the answer is yes that was back in 1986. I wasn't in much pain back than but now that I'm older here it comes. I always keep im mind how fortunate I am. There's nothing like the smell of baked bread. Very nice sonnet.

Yes, our senses keep us in tune with the world..It would be awful just to loose one of them..I know a lady whose husband pushed her out of a vehicle while going down the road at 55 miles an hour..She lost her sense of smell from the accident..He spent five years in prison..Her injury is permanent and he is now back out of prison living the same life..Thanks for stopping by..Sara

And of these, love is the greatest. I am a rock. I cling to the moss. The water ripples oer' my back. With my friend moss, I do not lack. A spirit lives inside your dreams. When all is lost, it's not as it seems. The scent of sight and taste of touch. Without our love, we have no crutch. A thought invoking write Andrea. May peace be with you when you see the light.

I think as we lose one sense another intensifies. Maybe when we lose them all we gain a sixth sense that will reach out beyond our earthly bounds. Don't know. Just imagining. Enjoyed your poem.

i just can't imagine how life would be without our senses. That would be awful. Losing part of ourselves -that is what amounts to. And if we lose all of it - ha we would be a cripple -relying on others to translate, to live through. What a wasted life that would be. I shudder at the thought. Good write, Andrea. Thought provoking!
